The pedagogical intervention of this action research study was applied to a group of fourth grade students at Gimnasio de Los Cerros school in Bogotá, Colombia. The Gimnasio de los Cerros school is a private primary and secondary school with about eight hundred students, strategically located on the eastern hills of Bogotá in the high area of Usaquén neighborhood. The school has been an International Baccalaureate IB. World School since November 1985 and it offers the IB Diploma Programme. The IB offers high quality programs of international education to a worldwide community of schools. At the school, students are expected to have an excellent English level when they get to grade eleven where they have to present the IB examinations in different subjects including English in order to obtain the IB international diploma.
The school’s mission is to form each one of the students integrally through the joint work of families, teachers and other members of the educational community so that they can face their lives successfully; educating them to develop human Christian virtues. The school seeks to be an institution where parents, teachers, students, the board of directors and other members of the educational community form a solidly united, coordinated, professionally prepared and socially open team to accomplish its mission, instilling in the students an active role in their formation process, that will enable them to be aware of their social responsibility.
The school provides to students classrooms, laboratories, computer rooms and an auditorium all complying with technical and architectural requirements for students to achieve an optimum learning experience, following the standards demanded by the European Community in terms of function and comfort, lightning, acoustics and furniture which help students to have a better concentration and performance in the pedagogical activities. This is complemented with a modern infrastructure for physical development consisting of an indoor gymnasium, several sport courts and fields, and an environmental park.
